Different Types of Brand Photography

Have you ever wondered what types of clients I work with? Are you curious what it’s like to work with a brand photographer for different types of businesses? Do you own a business and wonder if my services are for you?

I work with all sorts of businesses and brands, but I like to think of them as fitting into one of these three categories. Each business is unique and has different needs, but your business most likely fits into one of these categories when it comes to how we will work together.

PERSONAL BRANDS:

What is a personal brand?

I consider a personal brand anyone who is building a business as a solo entrepreneur or sole proprietorship, where you are the face of your business and you don’t have a team of employees. Some examples of personal brands are graphic designers, artists, authors, podcasters, coaches, realtors, and many more.

What does a photoshoot for a personal brand usually look like?

Often times these photoshoots take place in a studio or home setting and I try to capture as much variety and personality as possible. We get shots of you working behind-the-scenes or with clients as is applicable for your business. We also get detail shots or flatlays of any brand collateral you have. These shoots often include photos of things that are not necessarily work related but just add to your personality online, so if you love to make cocktails or read or go for a run, we can capture that too to add dimension to your brand image.

PRODUCT-BASED BRANDS:

What is a product-based brand?

A product-based brand is just what it sounds like! If you create and/or sell physical products, but you are not the face of your brand, this is you. These brands can range from small etsy shops to bigger household name brands, and can include any type of product from things like home goods and decor, to toys and clothing, to luggage, to packaged food products like snacks, coffee, suppliments, etc.

What does a photoshoot for a product-based brand look like?

Often times product-based brands ship me the products they need photographed. We talk all the details online or on the phone, pick a location, talk over a shot list and vibe for the shoot, and then I execute the shoot and return the images by a certain deadline. The photos can be basic ecommerce photos but almost always include styled images or in-situ images with models to show how they are used and create lifestyle imagery to give the brand some personality.

COMMERCIAL BRANDS:

What is a commercial brand?

This is kind of my catch-all term for all other brands, but in particular, it includes brick-and-mortar businesses like small shops, salons, restaurants, and teams that work together in offices. Usually these businesses have employees working for them and need to capture a variety of the team in their photos.

What does a photoshoot for a commercial brand look like?

These shoots are typically shot on location where the business is located. They often times include headshots and team photos in addition to photos of how you serve customers, office culture, behind-the-scenes of your business in action, etc. Often commercial brands need a combination of these types of photos in addition to styled product or food photos as well.

All of my photoshoots start with a conversation and planning session to make sure I understand your business well and create the best visual representation of your brand! From these conversations we determine the best location for your shoot, what props we will need, if we need models, and a comprehensive shot list for your brand photoshoot.

You don’t need to know which one of these categories of brands you fall into, you just need to be clear on your vision and the mission for your brand in order to get the most out of your brand photoshoot!
