5 Things That Will Make You Less Awkward in Front of the Camera

We’ve all been there. That feeling of being in front of a camera and not remembering how to smile naturally or what to do with our hands. Believe me, I get it! I may spend a lot of time behind a camera but that does not mean I like to be in front of it all that much 😅😉 BUT, being behind the camera a lot has given me a lot of experience working with people who are nervous to get their pictures taken and I’ve learned a thing or two along the way, SO today I am sharing a few tips with you to help you feel less awkward and more comfortable for your next photoshoot ☺️

  1. Do something

Lifestyle Headshot

Starting with pictures of you doing something will help you to ease into having your photos taken. For instance, make a cup of coffee or pretend to do something you do as part of your work. Movement is definitely a plus, but simply holding something in your hands like a mug of coffee or a book will even help!

2. Laugh

Even if it’s a fake laugh at first, it will probably produce a real laugh, which in turn will bring out your real smile. It also just helps you not to take yourself too seriously ;)

3. Don’t just look at the camera

You don’t need to keep your gaze locked in with the camera for a good headshot. While some of these types of straight-on photos are good, I often love the in-between shots the most. When someone glances out the window or looks down a little shy or throws their head back laughing you start to see their real personality come through in their photos.

4. Find a place for your hands

Whether you slip them into your pockets, rest them on your thigh, or place them on your hips, feeling like your hands have a place to be, helps you feel (and look) more comfortable. Just remember to relax them! Try not to grip things too tightly as it doesn’t look natural.

5. Play with your hair

Again, movement is good, and having a place for your hands is good, so this is a good go-to move. Whether you twirl a strand in your finger, brush it behind your ear, or run your fingers all the way back through your hair. Try it and see!

Bonus idea: if you are feeling super nervous it’s not a bad idea to loosen up with a little hard drink that you enjoy. Just don’t overdo it 😉
