How Small Businesses Can Up Their Instagram Game

It’s hard to know where to start with Instagram strategy when the algorithm changes so frequently. I often hear small businesses and brands getting discouraged at the metrics or simply not knowing how and when to change their strategy. Today I want to encourage you to stop focusing on the numbers and anchor your strategy on these 4 things, no matter how the algorithm is changing.

  1. Show up CONSISTENTLY.

This is two-fold. You should be consistent both in the type of content you put out, and the frequency with which you post. I suggest posting every weekday and giving yourself the weekend off (it’s hard to rest, but SO important for your well being). And as far as being consistent with your content, I’m talking about everything from the style of your photos, to the things you talk about, to the way you talk about them.

  2. Provide HELPFUL content.

Think about why your followers are there. How can you serve them and meet their needs? Providing simply helpful content is the best way to keep them following and engaging with your content. It’s also the best way to show up and be purposeful on social media. Nobody wants or needs more fluff in their life.

  3. ASK simple questions.

No matter how the algorithm changes it will always be in favor of showing content to people who want to see it. They find out what people want to see based on how they engage with the content. So yes, they may have told Instagram that they want to see your content by following you, but daily actions and habits speak louder than the one-time action of following you. AKA you want to make sure people engage on your posts regularly. One of the best ways to do this is to ASK them too. No, don’t say, “please comment below so we know you saw this,” that’s begging and it’s not a good look on anyone. I mean ask SIMPLE questions, the kind people have a gut response to and can’t help not sharing. I find that asking either or questions is the best way to get that gut reaction.

  4. Be REAL, honest, raw, and authentic.

There is a reason that authenticity is a cliché in our current culture. Because it’s especially important in the day and age where we can make up a fake identity on social media so easily. Let’s stop pretending that our lives are perfect…that we are perfect. Let’s stop putting up a facade and be honest with each other. Honesty creates real community. Period.

Now, if you’re saying to yourself, this all sounds well and good, but I never have pretty photos to post with my content, it’s probably time to schedule a lifestyle brand photoshoot 😉 Click the button below to get started!
