Questions to Ask when Location Sourcing for Your Brand Photoshoot

Location, location, location!

It’s one of the most important details of planning your brand photoshoot because it has implications for the lighting, versatility, and vibe of your brand photoshoot. Here are 4 questions you should ask yourself as you source a location for your brand photoshoot.

What setting does my brand make the most sense in?

Do you sell a household product? You probably want it shot in a nice home. Do you sell camping gear? For that, you’ll want a cool PNW destination. Do you work in an office? You’ll want a studio with a cute desk. You get my point. If you are a personal brand it probably boils down to where you work or meet clients. If you are a product-based brand it’s all about where your product would be used by your customers.

What type of vibe do I want for my brand?

Is your brand vibe beachy? Look for a beachy-themed Airbnb. Is it mid-century modern style? Look for a simple home or studio with mid-century furnishings. Is it for the outdoorsy person? Find a good wilderness location. Make sure you also consider if your brand vibes are bright and airy or dark and moody? Colorful, or monochrome? And things like that.

What is the lighting situation like at this location?

This is probably the most important question to ask! If your brand photographer is like me and works with natural light only, it is important to have a well-lit space with lots of windows! This is where I’ve got to give a shout-out to Home Studio List because they actually give every location a lighting grade and I think it’s the best thing ever! I wish more hosting sites understood the importance of this.

How versatile is this location?

You don’t want all your pictures to look like they were taken in the same location on the same day. Does the space you are looking at have multiple cute photo setups that you can move around into to create diverse content? Look for a home with a nice living space, kitchen space, outdoor area, etc. Or a studio that has different sets to switch out (like a desk and a couch or different backdrop colors to use).
