2016 Year in Review

This has been quite a year! January began with me six months pregnant and quitting my day job to go full time into photography.

One of the reasons I went full time was to accept a teaching position at Covenant High School. During Winter quarter I taught a basic photography class for junior and senior high school students. It was so fulfilling to teach about my passion and to see students work hard to achieve art through their photographs.

The first wedding of the year was a sweet couple who got married in January. This year I actually cut back a little on weddings and decided to focus on capturing families and product. This was a huge development for my business vision!

Fast forward to May 3rd. The day I became a mom to my sweet baby boy, Harvey! Of course he changed our world and of course I've taken thousands of pictures of him over the past 8 months. It's flying by and I already miss the days I could mold him to be picture perfect while he slept.

When school got out and I was done teaching and recovering from having a baby, I dove head first into family photography season.

During the summer I also took an online class called The Instagram Lab from Jenna Kutcher that changed the way I think about marketing my business and how I use social media. Through this class I began to develop a better vision for my business and honed my style of photography. I believe that my work is much more defined and intentional now. I think I have developed a unique style for my work and a confidence in it as well through the second half of this year.

Although my sessions still contain posed traditional shots, I have shifted to more lifestyle images. In this I hope to capture authenticity and the beauty in simple moments.

This was one of my all time favorite sessions. We trekked up to Naches Peak Loop for some family and maternity photos at sunset. I would love to do more of these adventure sessions in the next year!

I've had so many lovely families this year! I will just share a few more with you.

In addition to family sessions, I've had a few seniors sprinkled throughout the year. It's been fun to go up into the mountains for some of these sessions.

Oh and then there were Christmas mini sessions at Martin's Tree Farm! I'm so thankful for so many clients who were willing to brave the cold and rain with me for these!

Product photography is a realm of photography that I have grown to love this year! In addition to monthly sessions with hello, cupcake, I added Wax and Wool, etc as a client and became a brand rep for CampLight Apparel.  Etsy has featured my images for Wax and Wool, etc multiple times this year in their advertising material, emails and Instagram marketing. In addition, I was recently asked to do an Instagram takeover for Go Bold with Butter to promote holiday baking. These small successes have had a huge impact on my vision for 2017.  I hope to expand this part of my business next year and take on a few more regular small business clients. I love to support handmade and small business and so this just makes so much sense for me. It is also very fulfilling to work with a client on branding their images from month to month and creating beautiful content for them to share on their social media and shop websites.

Growing my product photography isn't my only goal for 2017 though, I am also hoping to *drum roll* launch a small PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP out of my own living room!!! This is a big step for me but I have so much vision for how it will look!

Over the past year I've casually mentored a few people who've approached me with questions about photography and what I do. I also loved teaching high school and felt like it was a big success for me. So this seems like the next logical step for me! I am so excited to share my knowledge of technical photography as well as a vision for beautiful images with other people.

Are you a mom with a camera but you don't know how to take cute pictures of your kids? Are you a small business owner who wants to spruce up your Instagram grid? Are you an artist wanting to add photography to your skill set? This will be the perfect workshop for you!
