There are two main tourist attractions in the town of Gruyeres. One is the castle and one is the cheese factory (you've heard of Gruyere Cheese, right? They import it here at like 20 per lb! If you're feeling like a special treat go pick some up at your local grocery store. It's so yummy!)
It was fun to learn how they make Gruyere Cheese interactively at the factory and watch the whole process being done. It is not as fun to read about it on Wikipedia though, so I will spare you all the details and just give you a visual overview!
The Castle of Gruyeres is restored to be a museum of what it would have looked like when it was occupied by various counts in the 11-16th centuries. No one knows the beginnings of this castle which makes it a bit mysterious!
The town is less than half the size of Buckley, Washington with a total inhabitants of less than 2,000! Surrounded by mountains, Gruyeres has several cute cafes and shops and lovely cobblestoned roads.
